Jeff Pier Memorial Race
Remembering Jeffrey J. Pier (1959–2014)
A Legacy on the Slopes
Jeffrey J. Pier—known simply as "Jeff" to his friends, family, and the generations of athletes he mentored—was a cornerstone of the American ski racing community. A man of boundless energy, dry wit, and profound faith, Jeff dedicated his life to the pursuit of excellence on the snow and the personal growth of every skier he coached.
Born in New Jersey, Jeff’s journey in ski racing took him from his home state to the peaks of New England and beyond. He served as a respected coach and program director at Hidden Valley (NJ) and the historic Ford Sayre Academy (NH) before leading the NCAA team at St. Lawrence University from 2000 to 2009. His impact reached the highest levels of the sport, including stints coaching with the U.S. National Ski Team and serving as the national chairman of NCAA alpine ski racing.
An obstacle is only an opportunity to find a solution
Jeff was more than a technical coach; he was a life mentor. He famously taught his athletes that preparation and planning were the keys to overcoming any challenge. Whether he was leading summer camps in Europe, conducting USSA coaching clinics, or climbing all 46 of New York’s high peaks with his son, Lance, Jeff lived by the values of 110% effort and perseverance.
His legacy is carried on by his three children—Jaleigh, Lance, and Talyne—and the countless athletes who still hear his voice reminding them to "think ahead" and never be late for the bus.
